The elusive Malayan Peacock-Pheasant by Heliocyan The elusive Malayan Peacock-Pheasant by Heliocyan
Malayan Peacock-Pheasant (Polyplectron malacense)

I tried to stick with a restricted colour palette, but wonder whether I got carried away too much? It was originally planned monochrome - maybe even pencil - with only the spots in colour. But halfway through I thought it's missing something, and in came sienna & yellow...

Acrylic ink, Chinese brushes on cold press Bockingford paper.

Should anyone be interested to kindly buy a print, I do sell prints of this painting here on DA and in my ETSY store: [link]

I used this wonderful photo by :iconcycoze: as inspiration:

The suggester said: The elusive Malayan Peacock-Pheasant by *Heliocyan shows a beautiful use of the traditional and very old art form of ink use. The muted colours bring the contrast in the plumage of the bird nicely to life. As well, this work is a fine example that shows us that not every inch of the paper needs to be filled. I think it was a great call to add in the sienna and yellow - for some reason it makes the naturally desaturated Peacock-pheasant stand out even more, which in turn highlights its gorgeous shimmering spots. It sits there so proudly, you really turned this already wondrous bird into something fit for myth and legend. Really great work on the background as well; lots of little details without taking attention away from the subject. Stunning!

Gorgeous! You showed a beauty of this bird. In the photo it looks modest, but in your painting it becomes a proud peacock. Spots of sienna and yellow made the whole painting even better. :)
