'Nightwatch' Tent for Fieldcandy by Heliocyan 'Nightwatch' Tent for Fieldcandy by Heliocyan
I am very happy I can *finally* share this project with you!

Although I had uploaded first sketches and showed little sneak peaks before, I had to keep it quiet for over a year while working on it - and everyone who does creative work knows how hard this can be.

I collaborated with Fieldcandy to design this artwork for a new tent which has only just been launched. Fieldcandy produces colourful, high-quality tents, most of them are limited editions.

I designed and painted three artworks on huge canvas especially for the layout of this tent: The front and back piece, and additionally a lot of leaves and bushes to merge the sides so they will match up. The idea was to create a fun and colourful ‘3D’ artwork, showing the front as well as the back side of a resting tiger - instead of merely showing two different pictures on both sides of the tent - so one could walk around ‘him’.

All profits from each individual tent is going directly and exclusively to the wildlife organisation ‘Save Wild Tigers’ and will go entirely towards tiger conservation projects. Nothing better than mixing design and art with conservation!

Please do feel free to share and spread the word, here is the link to the Fieldcandy website: www.fieldcandy.com/tents/adult…

Oooh, looking at other pictures of this in your gallery, I think I found one I'd already faved, which got a daily deviation almost exactly four years ago (the painting you based the tent on?). That's kind'a interesting.
It turned out really nice, by the way. ^_^

I don't know if it's the angle of the photos, or perhaps a trick with the flora but it seems to me that the front of the tiger is standing but when you walk around to the other side it's sitting. I'm not sure if that's part of the illusion and perhaps it "sat down" (or stood up depending which side you're coming from) while you were walking to the other side or perhaps an accidental over site but in my brain it's just not flowing right. Otherwise it's an amazing piece and I love the overall concept not just with a wrap around design but with the idea that profits go to conservation.

Also, your link is broken. It still leads to the Fieldcandy website, but one must go to the home page then manually navigate to the limited edition tents.

Thanks a lot for letting me know about the link! Fieldcandy has changed their website since I posted this nearly a year ago, that's why this link did not work as it used to. It should be fixed now.

As to the tiger, the one on the front is actually resting on his front paw. It is difficult to see properly, maybe it is better visible on the template scans I show here (side A) heliocyan.deviantart.com/art/T… and here (side B) heliocyan.deviantart.com/art/T…
The foliage had to match up exactly for both sides, because the shape of a tent is sloping and surrounding, it had to be distorted. It's not quite as straight forward as just painting a flat canvas. :)

I didn't realize it had been so long that this deviantion was posted. When the website said limited edition I assumed it to be relatively recent. |D And yes you do have a point about sloping surfaces, I didn't take that into account when writing my previous comment.

I can' believe it myself that it is already nearly a year ago! Time seems to vanish so fast. I don't even know how many they have sold so far, they are not in contact with me. But as those tents are rather expensive I don't assume they will sold out soon.

It proves one point, though: one should check every now and then whether all the links still work, and maybe update the texts as well. Thanks again for letting me know! :)

Fantastic! Love the concept, adore the art—just gorgeous! And what a cool idea, both the tent itself and that the profits go to "Save Wild Tigers'. Congrats on the DD!

I'm actually less impressed with the tiger than I am with the foliage.  The way the panels merge really achieves that 360 degree effect you were going for.  Well done!

Thank you so much!!! I had quite a struggle with the foliage, it turned out far more difficult than I had originally thought to match up all those leaves! It was one of those things that seem straight forward and easy in your head, but once one starts they turn out to be not. :D

Oh. My. Goodness. I want to go camping purely so that I can inspire tent-jealousy in others. I would have to buy two so that I could look at the outside while sitting on the inside. This is beautiful, what an amazing opportunity for you! :D Congrats!

I'm glad you feel that way, actually. Sometimes the work is its own best reward, to be sure.
I still worry about your financial welfare, though. I have no idea why; I just do. I guess I sorta feel like you deserve to have financial stability, if only so you can continue to grow as an artist. Kinda just want that for you.

Your words just really warmed my heart. Thank you so much, you are too kind!!
Yes, it is frustrating at times. The uncertainty of any finances coming in is often grinding and depressing.... I know I will never have things others take for granted, like renting a nice place or be able to even afford and run a car. But that's fine with me. I have chosen this path, and I guess I would be really unhappy if I would not be able to do what I love most. The knowledge that there are people out there who care about my well being does help a great amount. I do hope I can grow as an artist eventually, I just wish I wouldn't need to fear for something stupid as money all the time...

:iconheliocyan:
Heliocyan Featured By Owner Jun 4, 2013   Traditional Artist
:D Occasionally! The problem is, most people are not willing to *spend* money on art. I do a lot of exhibitions but end up spending more on those than I make. It is something most people seem to take for granted... and then there are the big companies, who would be interesting to work for, they rather commission the big names.

BUT when one has an opportunity like this tent design, one just has to go for it!! I hope this will advertise my name and lead eventually to more commissioned work by companies. (Funny enough, Fieldcandy themselves have now some smaller design jobs for me. Nothing big, but all bread and butter...)
