I just had to paint her when I head about her..... for our ongoing tiger project: [link]
This is such a sad and tragic story: The tigress in this painting is Jhurijhura and one of her (nearly grown up) cubs. She was a wild tiger, lived in the Bandhavgarth national park in India. André took the reference picture in Spring 2009.
She delivered three more cubs in early 2010, but those little ones have since become orphaned.....
On 18th of May 2010 some high rank politicians, their friends and families smeared a senior park ranger to have an exclusive "night drive" in the park. This is illegal, the tigers are nocturnal and hunt during the night, they need to be left alone for that reason. They entered the park with three jeeps for this special event. Unfortunately, one of them hit the tigress with the jeep. She ran off, injured, but instead of informing someone they just drove off as if nothing had happened! Maybe they were scared of the consequences of their actions, maybe they were thinking the impact wasn't that bad (as Jhurijhura could still run), or they just didn't care, who knows.
The next days, the tigress didn't turn up at the water place where she was normally seen every morning, no sight of her nor her babies. After a couple of days, the rangers started looking where she was. They found Jhurijhura dead in the park, her three little cubs sitting hungry beside her...... she had died of internal bleeding. Only after the investigation of what could have caused her death it came out that people had entered the park during that night. Who knows, maybe she could have been saved if they had reported their incident straight away?
The park management promised to look after the orphan cubs, they were only a few months old and far too young to look after themselves. They promised to make sure the tiger cubs would be protected until they could be released into the wild again, but they had no save area to protect such little tigers because they have just never considered that they would have to look after orphan tiger cubs! So one of the three has died already!
I saddens me so much that it has obviously still not sunken in how close we are to loose this species in the wild forever. With the death of Jhurijhura an entire generation of Bandhavgarh's tigers is lost, destroyed by a moron behind the wheel. And the consequences? A senior forest officer has been "suspended from duty over his possible involvement." I'm seeking justice for her!
Holy crap, after reading that i was in tears, that's such a sad story, those poor cubs! I don't think anything I've read before has made me cry this bad before! The picture is truly gorgeous, not only in detail, but in it's spirit. I can actually feel the love they have for one-another. Thank you so much for making me cry, it makes me feel human and alive.
This picture has such a warmth to it, with a connect (both in the sense of a tangent, and an emotion) between the two subjects. One can tell, instantly, that they are mother and child.
. . . And what a tragic story. I can't help finding disregard for life (human or animal) appalling and this is decidedly a case for that. I hope those responsible are held more accountable for their actions in some form or another.

It's a beautiful tribute, and so very well done.
I couldn't agree more! It is so sad and it makes me so angry, the way we treat other species
